Exposures vs. Injuries: Shifting our Focus for an Injury-Free Workplace
By Mr. Teg Matthews
Session# 1
Monday February 22, 2010

10:30 - 11:10

Companies serious about safety performance often talk about the injury-free culture. The problem is that despite adopting this new standard, many organizations continue to function within models and cultures that are incompatible with zero harm performance. Chief among these paradigms is the use of injuries as the measure of performance and the trigger for change. Injury statistics are an imprecise and reactive measure for a goal of doing everything possible to prevent an injury. This paper examines the problem with an injury focus and discusses principles for adapting and using an exposure focus for injury-free performance.
