Contractor safety management is a vital responsibility of both the hiring company and the contractor. Owner companies have a direct responsibility to prevent injuries to company and contractor employees, as well as to prevent damage to property, disruption of operations, and loss of production. This paper describes the components of a comprehensive program consisting of four key management processes: Contractor Safety Prequalification; Pre- Job Safety Explanation Meetings; Facility Safety Orientation; and Site Safety Performance Monitoring.


Presenter – Mr. Steven R. Hemler

Steven R. Hemler is a Loss Prevention Specialist with Saudi Aramco. He obtained Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the United States. From 1981 until 1997, he worked at Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, Tennessee. Since 1998, Mr. Hemler has been employed in the Saudi Aramco Loss Prevention Department, working in Dhahran Saudi Arabia. While at Saudi Aramco, he has led corporate initiatives to improve contractor safety, scaffolding safety, electrical arc flash safety, excavation safety, fall protection, etc.
