Recognizing SH&E Professionals’ Contribution in Achieving Business Excellence

By: Mr. Tony Smith
International Consultant
National Safety Council, USA

Six years ago the National Safety Council in conjunction with Exxon Mobil decided to initiate an award which would be set at the same level as the Malcolm Baldrige Award for Quality.

The award was to recognize organizations which could demonstrate World Class Safety, Health and Environmental performance through a truly integrated management system.

The study of the applications for this award are used to provide evidence which can influence current and future business leaders as well as to demonstrate the value of such awards to safety, health and environmental management.

The award program is supported by a network of 22 Global Partners across five continents committed to promoting SH&E as an integral component of business. They promote the award to local organizations and encourage them to apply. They also nominate highly qualified and recognized individuals from government, universities, business and industry to be part of the 40-plus reviewers of the applicant submissions.

Hazard Identification and Control of Process Plants

By: Mr. Namir George
Manager - International Consulting Services
National Safety Council, USA

The first step in any risk assessment should be identification of the potential hazards. Perhaps the most common hazard identification method is experience. All of us are aware that crossing a busy road can be a hazardous undertaking and we have learnt from experience. Consequently we take appropriate steps to minimize the risks such as crossing at pedestrian traffic lights, paying extra attention, etc.

Another commonly used method of hazard identification is a check list. Check lists are appropriate for existing plants and processes, but less satisfactory for new designs or processes.

The most established and well documented technique for systematic identification of hazards in the process industry is the Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) study.

The HAZOP study methodology was developed by ICI in the early 1970’s and it has become widely recognized within all process industries as the technique for identification of hazards and operability in new plants.
