Recently, the American Society of Safety Engineers-Middle East Chapter (ASSE-MEC) held its first Technical Dinner Meeting in the Western Region of Saudi Arabia at the Jeddah Hilton Hotel. Over 100 chapter members and other safety professionals, and management personnel from Saudi Aramco Oil Company, Petro Rabigh Refinery, Saudi Electric Company, King Abdullah University Project, King Faisal Specialist Hospital, and Al-Ittifaq Steel Company attended this event. This event is the start of many other activities to be offered in this part of the kingdom in the future.
The meeting started with a welcoming introduction by Mr. Tariq Al-Ghamdi, president of ASSE-MEC, followed by two presentations:

In his presentation, Mr. Pemberton examined both “Behavioral Safety” and “Safety Culture” and clarified their true meaning, application, and importance to improve safety in large and small organizations. He highlighted the results of three case studies from proven methodologies that reflect three necessary “P”s for success – the process, pace and people.
ELECTRICAL ARC FLASH MITIGATION

During his presentation, Mr. Al-Sufyani highlighted the potential dangers behind electrical arc flashes. Arc Flashes have already caused several injuries and fatalities around the world. The presenter also discussed latest technologies, administrative controls and personal protective equipment to eliminate arc flashes incidents, reduce their effects and protect the people.
Additionally Khalid N. Doula, Vice-President, gave an overview of the ASSE and the benefits of becoming a member. He also highlighted the goals of the chapter and how to promote Health, Safety and Environment in the region thru regular workshops and technical meetings.
Following the presentations, Mr. Tariq Al-Ghamdi presented a token of appreciation to the speakers. Finally, a special token of appreciation was presented to Mr. Ghassan G. Abulfaraj, Division Head of Saudi Aramco Loss Prevention in Western Region, for his continuous support to the society activities.
